30 Aug 2005 - Broadband connections should be revised to match the usage

Staselog Ltd proposes that the broadband operators should refine their products to match the specific needs of various kinds of usage. In addition to this, the top speed could be increased 100-fold, include guaranteed bandwidth for all users and cut off more than half of the monthly entry price of subscriptions.

"Today, a subscriber is unable to see any improvement when upgrading a subscription to a more expensive one. No wonder that the cheapest option is the most popular one", says Professor Hannu H. Kari from Helsinki University of Technology. The more expensive subscription features higher theoretical top connection rate, however, without any guarantee for the actual trasfer rate.

"Games require small latency and Internet voice calls require constant latency, however, the connection rate doesn't have to be very high. The live video and digital multimedia are getting increasingly popular and this causes demand for considerably larger bandwidth for broadband connections. Tomorrow's mobile phone will be a portable Internet terminal with Skype and a video camera. This will require high quality requirements to the connections, especially in case of wireless Internet", Kari continues.

"A basic consumer connection should be inexpensive and guarantee enough quality for voice calls and banking in the Internet. For extra price there should be options available which improve the quality further and ensure the quality for each purpose of usage. For example, the games would work fine, if the subscriber paid for the "gaming" option. It is also possible to make subscriber specific optimization, which enables high quality connection between home and work and other such tailored subscriptions. Modifications can be done on-the-fly, enabling watching a movie while downloading. This can be combined with billing according to the usage", says Jarkko Niittylahti, the managing director of Staselog Ltd.

"Within 5 years, the traffic in the Internet will increase 1000-fold. New services will appear, built on P2P technology platform, as is the case for Skype. Encrypted P2P gets common and this makes it impossible to detect and reduce P2P traffic when trying to solve congestion problems. By means of Staselog's technology, there is no need to reduce traffic. Operators can let the traffic to fill their networks and start selling quality instead of quantity. The one paying more has higher priority", says Teppo Tomann, the Marketing and Sales Manager of Staselog Ltd.
